Self-paced online embroidery course in which you re-create a medieval orphrey using typical medieval goldwork embroidery techniques.
Out of stock
In this self-paced online embroidery course, you’ll recreate an orphrey background found on an early 16th-century Dutch chasuble. The original can be found on a chasuble kept at Museum Catharijneconvent in the Netherlands (BMH t2911) and was made in the Northern Netherlands between AD 1500 and 1525. This online embroidery course will teach you many typical late medieval goldwork techniques, such as diaper pattern couching and layering your goldwork. You are working to the same scale as the original (c. 30 x 13 cm).
In this online embroidery course, you will use real gold passing thread with a silken core and Chinese flat silks. These materials come close to what was used in the Middle Ages. This self-paced online embroidery course is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. However, this is a LARGE project that requires several hundreds of hours of your time. You also need to be able to thread a fine #10 needle and see the holes of your 48ct linen (with magnification). Like the medieval originals, the work is fine and the finished pattern measures approx. 30 x 13 cm.
The online embroidery course materials include detailed downloadable PDFs with background information and instructions on accessing the eleven videos (setting up a slate frame, traditional pattern transfer and nine stitching videos; 500 min. total). The full embroidery kit includes Sotema 30L Ricamo candido Linen, needles, beeswax, 22 colours of Chinese flat silk, Stech 80/90 Echt Gold Seide, Stech 120/130 silver, two types of gilt twist, linen sewing thread and padding threads.
You will also need an iron and ironing board, scissors, pencil/marker, coloured pencils, pins, baby brush, ink or paint, fine brush, pounce powder, pounce pad, transparent paper, kitchen towel or pricking mat, and materials to frame your slate frame. Use a device with a larger screen to view the videos. Mobile phones are not recommended! After purchase, you will have access to the instruction videos for at least a year. In addition, you will receive a download link for the PDF instructions via email.
You can learn to re-create an orphrey figure to stitch into your finished background in this self-paced online embroidery course.
A traditional pattern transfer kit is also available for those who like to transfer the pattern onto their fabric in a medieval way.
Great effort has been made to source the materials for this kit from small, family-owned businesses. Whenever possible, I will opt for ecological and fair trade products. The shipping box was made in India from recycled materials.
Please note: This kit and course are for the orphrey background only. There’s a separate course available for the figure. Shipping costs are added upon checkout. Due to the immediate access to this course’s downloadable content, refunds cannot be honoured. You will have access to the instruction videos for at least a year after the date of purchase.
