In this self-paced online embroidery course, you’ll recreate an orphrey figure found on an early 16th-century Dutch dalmatic. The figure represents Elisabeth of Thuringia. The original can be found on a dalmatic kept at Museum Catharijneconvent in the Netherlands (ABM t2093c) and was made in Amsterdam between AD 1510 and 1520. The figure of Elisabeth consists mainly of or nué with some added silk shading. You are working to the same scale as the original (c. 18.5 x 6.8 cm).

In this online embroidery course, you will use real gold passing thread with a silken core and Chinese flat silks. These materials come close to what was used in the Middle Ages. This self-paced online embroidery course is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. However, it helps if you are a bit artistic and good at shading your colours. You also need to be able to thread a fine #10 needle and see the holes of your 48ct linen (with magnification). Like the medieval originals, the work is fine and the finished pattern measures approx. 18.5 x 6.8 cm.

The online embroidery course materials include a downloadable PDF with background information and instructions on accessing the five videos (setting up a slate frame, traditional pattern transfer and three stitching videos; 268 min. total). The full embroidery kit includes Sotema 30L Ricamo candido Linen, needles, beeswax, 15 colours of Chinese flat silk, Stech 80/90 Echt Gold Seide, Stech 120/130 Echt Gold Seide, gilt and silver twist.

You will also need an iron and ironing board, scissors, pencil/marker, coloured pencils, pins, baby brush, ink or paint, fine brush, pounce powder, pounce pad, transparent paper, kitchen towel or pricking mat, and materials to frame your slate frame. Use a device with a larger screen to view the videos. Mobile phones are not recommended! After purchase, you will have access to the instruction videos for at least a year. In addition, you will receive a download link for the PDF instructions via email.
