Historical Examples Lesson 3

Historical Examples[1]

Although Opus Anglicanum seems to have been very popular, judging from the contemporary written sources, there appears to be only one instance of it being seen in a painting. The Solothurn Madonna shows St Martin/Nicholas wearing a blue velvet chasuble with golden scenes underneath Gothic arches (see, for instance, the Vic cope further below). The painting has been made by Hans Holbein the Younger in AD 1522, when he lived in Basel, Switzerland. It is unknown where Holbein saw Opus Anglicanum. But his rendition proves that these were still valued pieces decades after their heyday (Wetter, 2016).
