Description

In this self-paced online embroidery course, you’ll learn three of the most important medieval techniques: beading, couching and silk embroidery. The design has been adapted from a chasuble orphrey fragment held at the Bayerischen National Museum in Munich, Germany (Inv. Nr. T 297). This particular scene is part of a famous chasuble cross design depicting the Nativity vision of St Bridget of Sweden. In 2020, I wrote a blog post about these embroideries. The fragment from the BNM dates to the 3rd quarter of the 15th century and was made in the Lower Rhine Area. You are working to the same scale as the original (c. 20.5 x 15.8 cm).

In this online embroidery course, you will use real gold passing thread with a silken core, stone beads, freshwater pearls and Chinese flat silks. All materials come close to what was used in the Middle Ages. This self-paced online embroidery course is suitable for anyone who would like to embroider. Goldwork embroidery experience is not necessary. You only need to be able to thread a fine #12 needle (with magnification). Like the medieval originals, the work is fine and the finished pattern measures approx. 20.5 x 15.8 cm.

The online embroidery course materials include a detailed downloadable PDF with background information and instructions on accessing the four videos (setting up a slate frame, traditional pattern transfer and two stitching videos; 138 min. total). The full embroidery kit includes Sotema 30L Ricamo candido Linen, needles, beeswax, padding thread, 16 colours of Chinese flat silk, Stech 140/150 Echt Gold Seide, freshwater pearls, stone beads and gilt spangles.

You will also need an iron andand ironing board, a slate frame and materials for framing up, a baby brush, scissors,, and pins. Use a device with a larger screen to view the videos. Mobile phones are not recommended! After purchase, you will have access to the instruction videos for at least a year. In addition, you will receive a download link for the PDF instructions via email.

A traditional pattern transfer kit is also available for those who like to transfer the pattern onto their fabric in a medieval way.

Great effort has been made to source the materials for this kit from small, family-owned businesses. Whenever possible, I will opt for ecological and fair trade products. The shipping box was made in India from recycled materials.

Shipping costs are added upon checkout. Due to the immediate access to this course’s downloadable content, refunds cannot be honoured. You will have access to the instruction videos for at least a year after the date of purchase.

Note: As a small business owner within the meaning of Section 19 Paragraph 1 of the VAT Act, VAT is not charged.
