Downloadable eBook on medieval long-armed cross-stitch embroidery. It contains historical samples, charts, diagrams, and a bibliography.
Although cross-stitches are rarely found in medieval embroidery, their fancy cousin, the long-armed cross-stitch, was used either as a counted thread technique or as an ‘off the grid’ filling stitch. This 20-page eBook contains many pictures of two 12th-century chasubles embroidered in a monastery in the Black Forest, Germany. Countless geometric patterns were worked in the counted version, whereas the biblical scenes were stitched off the grid. The included bibliography will allow you to explore these fascinating pieces further.
To help you master this versatile stitch yourself, charts of 36 geometric patterns found on one of the chasubles are included. Four technical drawings will allow you to master this stitch quickly, regardless of the direction you are working in. All you need is an even-weave linen (I used 40 ct) and filament silk (I used DeVere Yarns #60).
